Caps Certification is a training program designed for homeowners interested in becoming certified aging in place specialists. It is designed to give homeowners the knowledge and skills needed to provide an aging in place expert service to their community. What is it? To be a certified aging in place specialist, you must pass the exam provided by the National Association of Home Builders (NHA). This exam is based on the Common Areas of Plumbing and Electrical Safety Standards (CAPS) Code. It is important that you read the entire CAPS Code before taking the test. The questions on the exam, unlike most others, are written and not based on a visual reading of the question. Once you pass the exam, you will be provided with a certification card.
Who can take the exam? The NHA offers this exam to anyone who is interested in becoming a certified aging in place specialist. You do not have to be a licensed home inspector or a licensed remodeler to take the exam. The only prerequisite for entering the program is that you have completed high school. However, the certification is not transferable to other companies unless you take and pass the national certification exam.
What are the skills you learn through the course? The three main components of the exam include hazard communication, hazards design, and modifications safety. Hazard communication identifies any physical or chemical dangers that might be faced by the elderly, disabled or inexperienced home occupants. It includes the knowledge of how to recognize possible problems, the measures to be taken in order to avoid those problems, and how to communicate those recommendations to family members. The course also covers the use of mechanical and structural modifications to provide safe living standards to seniors.
The course covers areas such as bathroom safety and bathroom layout modifications. Elderly, disabled, and inexperienced home occupants are more at risk of injury or death if they utilize inappropriate bathroom space or face slip and fall injuries. The modifications course address issues of safety and bath space modifications to provide improved usability, increased security, and improved bathroom environment. What is a whole house caps certification? In general, a whole house caps certification, or HHC, is a comprehensive training and exam package that includes both classroom instruction and on-the-job practice materials. Both of these training options allow home remodeling projects to be completed quicker than with other alternatives. With the HHC, you learn and receive the necessary skills and knowledge from certified professionals in the field. Once you successfully complete the training, you are then able to take the exam, pass it with flying colors, and gain CHA certification, which is the highest rating available.
In order to become certified as a CHA, you must successfully complete one of three courses offered through HHC. The first of these three courses, which lasts three hours, is the foundation course for CHA certification. The second of these three courses, which is an hour long course, addresses the hazards associated with aging in a home, and how to handle them effectively. The third course focuses on safety management in the home, and how to ensure the safety and health of homeowners as they age.
